MENTAL HEALTH FACILITATOR TRAINING
The Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) program is designed to improve access to mental health care in a given community by educating and training community members from diverse backgrounds.
This training is designed to provide lay individuals with the tools and skills necessary to:
Dr. Shirlene Smith Augustine is an Associate Professor and Coordinator for Recruitment & Admissions in the Department of Counseling at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. Dr. Smith Augustine holds a doctorate in Guidance and Psychological Services with a specialization in Counseling Psychology. She is also a Mental Health Facilitator with NBCC-International.
Dr. Smith Augustine has extensive experience in counseling, education, and administration both in the United States and Belize. Her psychological/counseling experiences involves working with school aged children, working with children labeled as ‘at-risk’ in and outside institutions, and providing in and out-patient mental health services.
Dr. Smith Augustine has facilitated numerous workshops on counseling and counseling related issues in Belize, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States. Her scholarly work includes publications on school counseling in Belize, spirituality in school counseling, mental health issues in school counseling, cultural competence, disability in women and funded grants in the areas of program development, academic advising, and teenage pregnancy. Dr. Smith Augustine continues to work closely with her colleagues in Belize in developing strategies to strengthen school counseling and mental health services.
Mental Health Facilitator training will be held on July 31st and August 1st at BTEC on the ITVET Compound Freetown Road.

- Support those in need of mental health care.
- Work with existing care resources.
- Make referrals to mental health professionals as needed.
