History of Belize
Belize has a rich and diverse history shaped by its indigenous roots, colonial past, and journey to independence. The country was once home to the ancient Maya civilization, which flourished between 250 and 900 AD. The Maya built impressive cities, such as Caracol, Lamanai, and Xunantunich, and left behind a legacy of advanced knowledge in astronomy, agriculture, and architecture. In the 17th century, British settlers, known as Baymen, established logging settlements along the coast. Over time, Belize became a British colony known as British Honduras, officially declared in 1862. The 20th century saw a growing movement for self-governance, culminating in full independence from Britain on September 21, 1981.
Today, Belize is a sovereign nation with a stable democracy, a multicultural society, and strong economic ties to both the Caribbean and Central America. Its history continues to shape its identity as a diverse and dynamic country.
